Learn How to Paint a Mailbox! – 50 Year Old Mailbox Restoration

This old mailbox needs some serious love and attention. The last time it saw a new coat of paint, your father was learning how to walk and the ruskies were putting up a certain wall.

PREPARATION

First, we scraped this random piece of plastic off of the box, and gently pried the star. GENTLY! Then, we use 120 grit sandpaper, followed by 220 grit and 400 grit. We use distilled water on a clean cloth and wipe away any dust or residue from the surface of the mailbox. We use distilled water so there’s no added residue from the water.

PAINTING

Now it’s painting time! We cover the lid of the mailbox with paper and blue tape. We used Hammer finish paint to coat the mailbox. We coat it several times until we reach the appearance that we want. Now, we let it dry for a couple days.

We Also paint the star with gold paint.

LID

For the lid, we saw the beautiful brass color that it has and we decided to sand it a little more with 400 grit sand paper. It looks very good but gold paint will give it a nice, long-lasting finish.
